Location: Kodiak, AK | I'll have to disagree a bit with that. At least in my experience. It depends on the type and orientation of your lights. Clear, direct white light...yeah, it can mess you up bad. But diffused, indirect light in red or green will alow you the same night vision as going darkened ship.
And before I get "corrected" for not having first hand experience, I fly at night all the time, and regardless of using NVG's, we have NV compatible lighting in the helo, where you can turn the lights on, read a map, tend to a patient, etc and preseve your night vision. It's not for convenience, it's flight safety.
As for fishing, I have my boat lit with red LED's and I can see my bait in the water, weeds, wave action, fish boatside and so on. I've taken steps to eliminate all direct lighting in my boat, meaning nothing shines directly in my eyes, but only shines downward or outward. I had to make some modifcations and do some extensive wiring, but let's just say I'm lit up like an aircraft carrier and my night vision is 100%.
As far as getting them, go with Bluewater LED's. Don't mess with anything else. All LED's are not created equal. They are made specifically for boats and are common place in the bass boat community. Mike is awesome to work with and his customer service is top notch.

These are my "working" lights. I also have my compartments lit and have some "bling" lights as well, but you get the idea.
