Subject: running out of gas

yesterday the father in law was pulling tubers around the lake and ran the boat out of gas. After refuelling, the boat was having a very hard time ideling and would run for a short minute and then die. I'm not an expert on outboard motors but I'm sure that running a motor out of gas is not a good thing, but how bad is it. I'm thinking that this motor just needs some fuel ran threw it at higher rpms. Any one ever run out of gas and what were the consecquences? Thanks
