Wouldn't leave home without it ... though there are various contraptions out there that can support your motor in different ways. The operative word is SUPPORT.

Last time I was shopping for a used boat ... I must have seen a dozen great rigs that had stress cracks in the fiberglass in various places surrounding the motor mount. As far as I was concerned ... these cracks were the result of hauling the boat without proper motor support.
