I had a 50 Evinrude with the big gearcase many years ago. It ran nicely with a 15" pitch prop unless the boat was extremely overlaoded. I could run a 17" prop with a very light load and even on a regular load my 600# fiberglass hull would perform OK but it took longer to break on plane than the 15" pitch. !5" would be the safe bet I think.
