I've been trying to buy a boat for the last month or so... Here are a few emails from boats in different states. So if you see these walk away. PS anyone got a 690 they wanna sell?

#1 email 1
Hi,
It's still for sale but before i start answering your questions, i`ll have to let you know that i left town a few days ago because i have to help my daughter organize her wedding, and i may stay here a while, but this is no problem because i`ll sell it through OTP. I will not require the money up front because you haven’t seen/inspect the boat yet. I guess you used OTP before, if you didn`t let me know because i met people that never used it and i will explain how it works in detail. Also let me know if you have other questions.

Thank you
Johnny

I have no complaints and the boat needs absolutely nothing, just add water. No junk here you will not be disappointed. The title is in the Online Trade Point possession as well and it is already signed by me and notarized so they will be responsible for the title transfer. Oh...and the title is clear. Like i said before i'll explain the Online Trade Point concept, their website is ( www.onlinetradepoint.com ). They are a chain of ebay drop off stores and they offer their services for craigslist users too. I left the boat in their possession when i left and intended to sell it when i got back (if you ask why i'm selling it now when i'm not around), but the wedding costs too much and i need to sell it now to help my daughter get married. They will handle the shipping and the payment. If you want to purchase this, you must register on their website, they send you an invoice with the transaction details and payment instructions and you send the payment to them. They receive the payment and start the shipping process. You receive the boat and you have 10 days to inspect it and see if it's exactly as described. If you decide to keep it, you let them know and they will transfer the payment to me, if you decide to return it, they will give you a full refund back and return the boat on my cost. So you can be sure the boat is exactly as described because i wouldn't sell something that i know it will be returned and loose extra money. The shipping cost is already included in the price listed on craigslist so you don't have to worry about that. The process is very simple, it probably looks a little complicated from what i explained but it's not and for a better understanding of how their service works you can check out their "Selling on eBay and Craigslist" and "How It Work" pages. I would advise you to read these pages before you register so you can be sure you understand how the process works. Let me know if you are still interested and if you have questions please ask, no problem.

The boat is not sold yet . It is in outstanding condition . There are no structural or electrical problems with this boat. Both hull and interior in nice condition .No mechanical issues with this engine at all. It starts easily and restart easily all day. It has ALWAYS been properly maintained and never run hard or abused. the boat gets it's oil changed twice a year. For the winter, the boat always gets acid washed on the bottom to remove any algee ..Trailer is in very nice condition and the tires are almost new with plenty of tread left. The seats and all the interior is in like new condition and has no fading, tears, stains ,mildew etc. It has a clear and clean title, free of all liens and encumberances.

There are a few 690s out there for sale right now that I've found recently. Do a search on Google for used 690 Ranger fisherman and a few should pop up.

So they want you to pay first, and then sit back and hope the boat gets delivered? (or even exists!) It's a safe bet when you get any sort of e-mail from someone who uses a tick mark in place of an apostrohpe that they do NOT speak any English. Amazing. Pays to be careful I guess. Funny how both sellers happened to be out of town planning their daughter's wedding, eh?

Wow! What a story! First & foremost believe less than ~ 50% of what people tell you, either over the internet or in the newspaper ad or on the phone.

Here's the story of how I bought Esox Maniac - my 1985 Skeeter SF150 w/ a 1989 Johnson 150HP. We had moved back to WI from Rhode Island in late 2000, so I started working on the wife right away- "Honey you have brand new car, etc." I really want to get a boat (never mind I didn't have a truck) - sold my K-5 Blazer when we moved to RI-> "Big Foot". I still miss that vehicle. Anywho, I start watching newspaper ad's & in early spring 2001 see ad for 1985 Skeeter in LaCrosse WI paper. Phone number is Winona MN.

Call number- "Yes, its still for sale, I have several offers, but if you're really interested its still for sale". Of course the boat is in pristine shape. Me- Well I need to see it first, and I definitely have to ride in it before I buy it! Seller- OK, not a problem. I ask him what the the price is again, he repeats the ad price. I've been watching the ad's & its been there for ~ 1 month. I ask; When can you show me the boat? Him- How about tomorrow? Me- lets make in Friday, I'm in Mauston WI. Where do we meet? Him - How about my work? Me- fine. What's the address? He gives me address. Obviously, I already have his phone number. Me; What's your home address in case I can't find your work address or something else happens and I don't have cell service? He gives me his home address.

Remember, I don't have a truck, so I call my best friend & say: What are you doing Friday? Of course he's up for a road trip. I go to bank & withdraw the cash - I already know I'm not paying full asking price. But I want cash on-hand anyway. There's nothing like a big roll of $100's to close a deal. On Friday early AM we head for Winona MN. I've already looked up both his home & work address. I tell my buddy lets drive by his house first - ah ha. Nice split level raised ranch on hillside w/drive under 2 car garage, deck & pool w/ big as$ realtor "FOR SALE" sign. Hmmm. Go to work address- Boat is sitting hooked up to truck w/ battery charger connected. Introduction's all around, he has a buddy there, maybe he thought I'd steal the boat. Me- What's up with the charger? Him: I just pulled it out of storage this morning. K- NP. Lets , go for a ride. He says follow me- K- head to launch. Get to launch & his buddy starts to get into boat. I say to the owner; No, this is a solo ride as I only fish with another person in the boat, so I want to see how it runs with two people. I say joking to my bud Scott, if we're not back in 30 minutes call the law & send out a search party!

We head out, he brings boat up on plane & it hum's! I notice tach is not working & ask about it- Oh- that, I think it's a loose connection, it seems to be intermittant Me - OK. We run ~2-3 miles & return, he lets me drive on the return, but he's the navigation guide - I'm not wrecking his boat!

We get back to his work/office, I say: Why are you selling it, it seems to run really sweet? Him, well I used to fish a lot of bass tourney's, but don't anymore ( boat is setup for bass tourney's - dual live well airation, with contols front deck-console- rear deck.) "But my wife really wants me to put in a new patio/deck with an above ground pool." Big lie- the pool & deck looked fine when we drove by - He's getting a divorce! Probably selling it right under wife's nose. I say well, I really like the boat, but my wife has me on a budget for a boat. He's now thinking he's got to deal with me getting a loan or waiting for my check to clear or permission from wife. I offer him $2000 under asking, he groan's & drops the price $500. I offer him $1500 under his asking price- cash on the spot & I pull out my roll of 100's & say- "if I leave, I'm not coming back".

He signs & dates the title (its just his name on the title), and I ask for a written bill of sale. He looks surprised, but I insist, He writes out a bill of sale, dates it, signs it and, his friend and my friend witness it. We hook the boat up to my buddy's truck & drive away.

The tach problem was a bad voltage regulator, that's also why he was charging the battery- $250 lesson learned. Take the boat you contemplate buying to a reputable boat dealer, and have them inspect it. I probably could have saved myself some additional cash. You can always negotiate the inspection cost, once you know whats wrong.

I wonder what his wife said at the final divorce settlement when she found out the boat was gone?

Have fun!
Al

Check this site periodically. It searches ALL craigslists at once and ebay as well.

TJ, This is absolutely true story. Actually I had full asking price in that roll. But I knew the average price for that year, model & rating of motor. His asking was ~1500 above that value. I also knew he had told me a big fat lie. So what else would you do? I actually gave him a fair market offer given the age & condition of the boat- There were similar boats available at ~500-1000 lower. But, I wanted a Skeeter, I just like how they drive.

Lastly, you were'nt in his shoe's. I would have done the same thing if our roles had been reversed- except for the lie's about the tach, wife, etc. I'd already been down that road, in the State of WI, divorce is usually a financial disaster for the guy. It was for me in 1989. So, I fully understood his motivation. He was trying to get as much as he could, and obviously his other offers must have been under what I paid him or he would have told me to leave. Cash in hand is also a powerful motivator.

I said this previously here on MF. With the economy the way it is, there's a buyer's market for "guy toys", unfortunately its the poor unemployed who are taking a double hit - no money coming in & losing equity in their toy investment's.

I try to be fair in all my dealings with people, and most certainly I don't lie to anyone. Well maybe if you ask me where I've seen WR class fish, then you might get a little white lie. But, I'd be doing it for your own good, I wouldn't want your nervous breakdown from seeing & not catching her to be my fault. It would be a terrible sight to see you sitting in your wheelchair at the care center, drooling all over yourself, and mumbling about how she broke your heart......

Have fun!

Anybody who would buy something as expesive as a boat on-line without seeing it deserves what they get in my opinion.

Very old saying that goes......."fool and his money are soon parted." I think Al Gore said that when inventing the internets.

They must be selling tons of boats bc I got the same scam email in reply to a jetboat, new the price was way to low. Thats why I told them I would only pay cash and need to inspect the motor first. They never replied. Scam for sure.

Got the same identical response on a Polaris RZR out of Brooklyn, NY. Man this guy has got a ton of fun toys for sale! Name was still Johnny Garcia...had a @att.net email address but came from a yahoo server, pictures hosted on picasa. I still haven't decided if onlinetradepoint.com is legit or an elaborate scam since every online article about it reads like a scammer wrote it. People run scams with ebay and paypal all the time even though the sites themselves are legit.

Got the same message, word for word, from a Marcy Schubert at Gmail. Also got a good one from David Hunter at Gmail.

Marcy's daughter is getting married too, so she sent me the same message word for word. So many people with boat have daughters getting married and are looking to sell their boats.

The I have David who lost someone in his family to a tragedy and is selling that person's boat. He works out of town all the time, so he is selling through ebay. When I insisted on seeing a boat, he said "how about a 20% deposit first, and then you can go see it at the shipping company." Also, he's donating the money to charity, so it's clearly a good cause.

In both cases, I'm obviously running to the bank to send my deposit/payment. Doesn't matter that they can't speak proper English and both of these boats are wrapped up so I can't see them.

Gotta love these people. Wish I knew where they were sitting behind their computer writing up these scams. I'd love to pop in on one or two of them.

Just ran another search for onlinetradepoint and came across this site:
http://www.xkaw.com/livelihood/news_events.asp?id=b561313
scroll down to the bottom and some guy looked up the addresses of the "drop points" and they're residential addresses or don't exist. Scam all the way and even more scammers posting "reviews" around the web saying its legit but other scammers are using their good name to conduct scams...clever. Anyway the OTP site was only registered in Feb 2011 so confirms all these "reviews" saying they've used OTP for years is a a lie.

I'm just waiting for the scammers to come on here and defend OTP as legit, they probably have a bit of time invested setting the whole thing up.

They went all out. From their blog they posted a story about their business published on Knoxville, TN news site WATE.

Here is the story

Here is their blog post about it:
http://onlinetradepointblog.wordpress.com/2010/02/15/local-ebay-sto...

Notice the difference that they changed the actual store name "iSold It" to their scam site "Online Trade Point". Dedicated scammers these guys are...

Got exactly the same reply about the trailer and daughters wedding, etc for an airstream trailer... ah well...

from Joseph R. Campagno <[email protected]>

The camper is not sold yet. Its condition is excellent with no issues at all; all the appliances are in working condition . Clean interior has no unpleasant odors of any kind (i.e.; pet, smoke, musty, etc.). Main floor doesn't show scuffs and blemishes. Carpeting and upholstery are in very good shape. There are no roof leaks of any kind. There is no water damage. Exterior shines nice, colors look good .It has a clear and clean title, free of all liens and encumberances.
