If you are looking to switch to synthetic, you can switch to amsoil at any time. I would agree in running what you have down as far as you feel you can, then fill up with whatever brand you desire. I would recommend running Amsoil HP injector oil. With your motor, you don't have to worry about mixing as the system does that based upon use of the motor.
Sabre is a pre-mix which is more expensive overall, designed from what I recall for smaller engines, and the auto blending feature of the motor will still mix the gas and oil in the ratios required for the motor use. Sabre allows premix to be at 100:1 (I believe) regardless of what ratio the motor requires. I use it in my Ice Auger and weed Whip at that ratio, even though both call for something around 32:1.
Nice thing I am finding is that you can find Amsoil products now at many NAPA stores, and it is not all that much more expensive than OE brands. I switched immediately with my 1999 Johnson 50hp from new, and I currently run it in my 2005 Yamaha 90hp.
Biggest benefit: less smoke and no plug fouling.
One suggestion: Once you switch over to synthetic, I would highly recommend running some decarbonizer through the motor. OMC used to have it in a can that would hook directly to what looked like a tire's valve stem behind the carbs specifically built into the motor (my 99 had that for fogging and decarbonizing purposes...slick as can be for doing things right) The petroleum based oils had a tendency to have excess carbon (all that smoke) which would reduce the performance of the system. After decarbonizing, you will probably notice a smoother running motor and better "umph" from the motor as well. I would also recommend replacing the plugs as well since you are burning excess carbon out of the combustion chamber, it potentially can foul a plug. Since the plugs for that motor are quite inexpensive, replace them as preventative maintenance, and your motor will be running really well.
That motor is a rock solid power plant!! There are times I miss mine since it ran so well, and for it's size, had a bunch of power.
