Subject: broken transom

I have 1996 Lund Pro Angler Deluxe and I am being told that the board in the transom is broken. Unfortunately for me I am also being told that the repair is $3100.00. Has anybody ever heard or experienced this before? Anybody ever attempt to change out a transom board by themself?
