Subject: RE: minn kota autopilot issues...

Couple questions, I have had autopilots for many years and have a bunch of different problems with them.

What model do you have? 55#, 65#, etc?
When the motor starts turning and will not stop, do you have the autopilot on?

I had a 55# autopilot motor that would get a mind of its own on occasion. Some of the time I believe it was caused by rough water. The compass in the head of the motor is fluid filled and I believe (not 100% sure) that somehow the constant up and down of the motor was causing it fits. I had better luck when I lowered the motor all the way down.

My motor issues were later resolved by a new control board (installed under warranty). The board was actually from a 65#, which is a 24 volt motor. I am told that the larger models have a "memory" built into them so if it loses track of where its at, it will return to its last known heading.

I have a 65# motor on my new boat and have never had the issue like I did with my 55#. So, either they resolved it, or it may be something to do with the smaller motors.
