Subject: '85 Evinrude problem

so i was out musky huntin the N. Wisconsin opener on saturday and when i first got out on the water it took me 15-20 minutes to get my engine started. sometimes when i turned the key it would at least try to start. sometimes it wouldnt. well i finally got it started and it was running just fine untill about noon. i was driving to my next spot and it just started to slow down on its own and it quit on me and i couldn't get it started again. had to use the trolling motor to get back to the boat launch. luckily i was on a small lake! its a 1985 50hp evinrude. any ideas what the problem could be? thanks for any help!
