Subject: A few motor questions?

I've got a buddy who has a 1998 Mercury 150 EFI that is losing compression (according to the mechanic he brought it to) and has a seal in the lower unit that needs to be replaced. The mechanic told him compression loss issues usually turn into an expensive fix and it's a deal where the motor could go the next time he uses it or it could last a while. The mechanic quoted him around $400 to replace the lower unit seal.

I have a few questions based on this scenario.

1) Anyone have similar experience with that motor losing compression that you would care to relate? Is it difficult to determine the cause when a motor is losing compression?

2) Where would a guy look for good quality used outboard motors other than Craigslist?

3) What are your thoughts on gambling with his current motor and just fixing the lower unit seal?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

-Chris
