Hiya,

If it only dropped about 2 inches, my guess is the gear shift lever that sits right under the main engine is the issue. that little spot is a very tough connection to get at. Usually requires removing the side cowling if possible.

I think you are awfully close....no need to take it to a mechanic. See if when you drop all the bolts if you can "feel" where the lower unit is hanging up (like on the shift linkage...etc.)
