I used to tow my 680T with a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L V6 and had many many many problems with it... similar to what you mentioned. Now, I am towing the 680T with a 2006 Trailblazer and it works great. I am getting between 14-16 mpg towing.
