At 32 degrees the water freezes. If you have drained the water in your lower unit, you should be fine prior to winterizing. So when pulling out of the ramp, especially if the air is 32 degrees or below, you should let you motor sit verticle to allow any water in the motor to drain completely out. Not doing this, the water in the lower unit might freeze and crack the lower unit case. Keep in mind that you should be doing this every time you pull out, as not transfer water from one lake to another.
