I would definetely use an automatic circuit breaker, but first off you may want to figure out why your fuse blew in the 1st place -more than likely either the wiring used to connect the trolling motor to the battery may have corrosion at the connection, or you may have a bad ground at the battery- that will generate a lot of heat- and could cause the wiring to melt or even start a fire if you hook up straight to the battery without a fuse/circuit breaker
