I don't have a merc, but I have a yammy and I would say I would always run the name brand oil, I would run the merc oil in your case. Why would you want to skimp on the lifeblood of your engine. All of the Major boat motor manufactures run extensive tests with these oils and make adjustments accordingly to work with your outboard for performance and longevity. And if your outboard is under warranty I would only run the merc oil. 10 dollars more is cheap insurance in my book, just buy one less lure this year and you can get the better oil.
