my crestliner fishhawk 1650 can fit rods almost 9' long! I was amazed - and the locker is big but has no tubes / supports. I just pile them in.

Really!!! What about the other Fishhawk models? Isnt the 1650 discontinued? What about the 1600 and 1700 models?
