I've been out of the "car" business for 3 years now. But I'll tell you that the late model diesels (2004+) are impressive, power and mileage. Are they worth the extra cost? you decide. 4500# towing is well within the towing capacity of a gasser, at lower fuel prices (remember the fuel prices last summer). Before my personally selected demise (couldn't make a decent living) at Ford I seen the technology in both gas and diesel pickups get much better, I'm sure the other manufacturers were very similar in results. I have driven and worked on all of them, and they are not that different (manufacturers), so picking just one" brand" is more a matter of personal preferance. For me at least I picked a gasser because of lack of easy availability of diesel fuel where I fish in Canada, also for my local endevors the gasser does fine. Bottom line, either will fit the bill, while you think of your boat as heavy... it's not.. it doesn't get really interesting till your towing 7000+.
