Outboard are more expensive to mfg, just due to shear volume of sales, compare the numbers of motors GM or ford manufacture compare to # number of motor merc pushed out. cost of tooling up, R&D, and overhead to support that line. Not enough unit sales to spread the overhead cost out. When economy was good no one complained to much about spending the $$$.
