Butterwheels isn't exactly right. If you plug them back in and the lights are full of water it might pop the bulbs, but if there's no water in the case you'll be fine. The reason they pop in the water is that the bulbs are hot, and the water is not. I switched mine out to LEDs and it was the best thing I've done.
But it they leak any water, they will pop. The bulbs are not only hot when you are backed in the water. 10+ years of using the sealed units, and have never had one bulb pop. I leave them plugged in all the time.
If you have a sealing problem, replace them with LED lights.
