I can only offer an answer to part of your question. I find using a color display provides a better level of target separation and allows me to interpret the sonar results with a higher level of accuracy than greyscale units. I can really see changes in substrate types with color, with the harder bottoms returning a much brighter red that softer bottoms. Plus, it is easier to see the details on the gps screens. I know that Lowrance makes some smaller units for ice fishing that are all set up for portability; you might need a different transducer though.
