I'm surprised that you wouldn't carry an extra bearing on a long trip, though... But then again, not everyone does a long trip either. I make one big trip (1000 miles one way with 40 of that on poorly paved dirt roads) and have seen plenty of bearings go down from losing the hub cup or bearing buddy... Not fun at all..
