for your first big boat, i would strongly consider getting something used.
it's inevitable that you're going to make lots of mistakes as you learn to use/run/load/etc your boat, we've all done it. when it's a $5k used boat those knicks and gaffs are easier to accept than when you've maxxed your budget on a new rig.
i'd suggest getting an older boat with good brand recognition such as a Tuffy/Ranger/Lund/Whatever. there are lots of good options in the $5-$7k range if you look around. use that for a "learning curve" boat and as a bonus your payments are smaller. in a year or two from now when it's time to step up to a new/nearly new boat it'll still be worth what you paid for it and you can sell it.
