Location: north central wisconsin | Greetings,
I have tried everything and just cannot get my recently purchased 2002 Merc 2 stroke to troll down to low speeds decently. I guess I expected some of this with the bigger 2 stroke(still running a 40 hp yammy with no issues on my other rig), but I'll need to make a change to do any amount of trolling, not to mention I wouldn't mind a queter, less stinky motor for my structure holding/position casting. I'd rather not put a kicker on this rig, so my question is what motor would be best to fill my needs. Any advice on some of the fuel efficient two strokes? Does Yammy make a motor similar to an E-tec or Opti? Would prefer yammy though would consider looking elsewhere for the best overall performance.
Dad has a 90 etec and it is a bit of a dog at top end for some reason on his 16' Nvigator(I've heard of this issue with this hull before though). His also does not like to troll under about 2.75 mph at its current setup. Right now, my boat gets up on plane ok and tops out at about 36.5 mph with two guys and all our gear. I wouldn't mind a slight loss in top end but would hate to lose alot, and any hole shot. The 690 tiller is only rated for a 90(UUGGHHH!!), and I would hate to slap a 90 Yamaha 4 stroke on it and realize it didn't have a decent hole shot.
Does anyone have experience with this or a similar rig that can give me some recomendations from them?? I'd love to get the rating increased so I could eliminate all question and slap a 115 4 stroke on it, but I don't see that ever happening. I like the trolling features on the Yamaha 90, but would like to know how others have faired with similar setups. If I could be sure of the hole shot, and not losing considerable top end, I'd go for it.
Thanks in advance.
