I think in general the Maxxums are good motors. Some will have problems, but that happens with everything. Are you sure a 42" shaft is long enough? I had a 42 inch shaft on a 16 foot Sea Nymph - not a particilarly big, deep boat, and the shaft was too short. I had to have it most of the way down almost all the time, and the motor would come out of the water in any kind of decent waves. Put a 48 inch shaft on it (guy I bought it from said it was 54....until I measured when it arrived), and it's just long enough in big waves. I had it blow out on me one day but it was pretty nuts out.
