In multi-species boats, I don't think you would notice much difference. the extra foot will not give you much extra space in terms of deck layout, etc, but in the water, that extra foot can be nice in rougher conditions and bigger waves.

with the design of most boats today for multi-use, the layout is wider and more stable than the boats of years ago. You will find them nice. about the only other thing you might gain from an 18 footer over a 17 footer is the ability to put a larger engine on the back.
