Distance wise I don't believe you have to worry. I would tell you to see if you can take a look at some boats and see where there mounted, that might give you some reference to where you should mount your motor. But if you can find an Alaskan with the plug already built in, that would be the best, then you can reference that to your boat.

As for wire gauge, Yes, 8 guage will do fine, and or 6 gauge will also do the job just fine.
