I had the same question when I was just looking for a new GPS. I talked to Pat Smith at Thornes and he steered me to an external antenna. You will always get a stronger signal with an external antenna.

The internal antenna gives you a little more in the way of mobility, but with a little ingenuity you can rig your external antenna unit to be just as mobile.

I am in the process of rigging a Global Map 3500C (external antenna) so that it will remain totally portable.

Personally, I would stick with the external antenna.
