| I would not accept the 500 hours and a 2 stroke is shot idea. If the motor is well cared for, oil/gas mixture always mixed properly using TCW3 oil, and winterized properly, I have seen 2 strokes last a lifetime. Like any other machine, keep the moving parts clean, well lubricated, and maintained, and the machine keeps running!
Four stroke technology development has been forced upon the industry by impending clean air/water laws. The motors run cleaner, burn less fuel, and are way quiet which is nice. They weigh alot more, but are coming down in that catagory every year, too.
They are quite a bit more money, but that can be offset if one runs the motor alot by the fuel economy.
