Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I would bet that you have a bad thermostat gasket.
But...to be safe, if you have access to a compression tester, see if there is an issue with that particular cylinder. Each of the cylinders should have the same compression give or take a few pounds. If this one shows something significantly less, you have something bigger.
Worst I could think here is you have a bad head gasket. That is nothing extremely hard to replace either..just takes time, and would require you to replace the thermostat gasket as well.
If the spark plug is not wet with water, my gut tells me it is not inside the cylinder. If you start the motor up again, check the gasket above #1 cylinder. I'm hoping this is all it would be is just a new gasket for the thermostat.
