I have a 2000 Merc 4 stoke 75 hp. Mine also makes the load noise when shifting. I discussed this with several people when I first started running the engine, and as someone already said, I got "nature of the beast" type of answers. So there is probably nothing any different with your motor than thousands of others. I would think the engineers would want to correct that issue if they haven't already done so, it's annoying to say the least.....jim
