You may ned to pull your wires out and check for nicks or wear.A nick or waar will cause a short if it contacts the trailer. I went through the same things years ago and I attached fishing line to the wire and pulled it out of the trailer. Sure enough the wire had rubbed bare. I put some electrical tape on the rubbed area and pulled the wire back though with the fishing line, hooked the wires up.... things worked fine.
