| I noticed that a number of dealers where showing a 8hp 4-stroke Yamaha as a kicker on a bunch of different brands of large fishing boats at the Minneapolis boat show. I asked a couple of them why there where showing an 8 horse on large (19-20) boats as I didn't think the motor would move the boat very fast or at all in a wind. The answer they can back with was that this was a new model for Yamaha and they wanted to get it out in the market. When I asked them how it would perform they didn't have a clue. I doubt that an 8-horse will push a 620 much past 4-5 mph on a calm day.
I had a 9.9 2-stroke (Evinrude) on a 219 Stratos (a smaller boat than the 620), that at WOT would push the boat at 5.5 mph (GPS). I now have a 15hp 2-stroke (Merc) on a 205 Triton, which is about the same size boat as the 620 that I have had up almost 7 mph (down wind). Most of the time I'm running about 6.5 at WOT on a calm day. I've also used a 9.9 4-stroke on the big Targa (around 20' I think), that I had to run at WOT to get the speed I wanted to fall troll on the LOTWs, as I recall I was getting in the 4.5-5 mph speed with the 9.9 on the Targa.
I'd go to a 15 if you need to go in the 5.5-6.5mph range to do what you want as far as trolling speed goes.
The other option is to use the big motor, the ones I've used will troll down to about 3.5 mph, and of course you can speed up. Only use the 8 hp for walleyes or if you really want to go slow, or if you need to get home.
