Would I have been better turning the gas line swith off and letting it shut down that way? I didn't know how to get the darn thing to shut down so I just cut the battery supply. Is there a better way to get it to shut down when this problem occurs??

No...you did the right thing. If it is indeed a bad starter solenoid, it would have been trying to keep firing the motor even if you turned the gas line switch to "off." It just wouldn't start obviously with no fuel...but it's still sit there and try and turnover...eventually running your battery down and burning up your starter. |
