I have a 2004 618vs ranger w/ 125 merc. brought new in April 2004. I love the boat and motor. Top speed for me and one other person is 52 mph (trimmed up) (ground speed on gps). I'm guessing with a 135 optimax you would get avbout 56 mph. (not really worth the extra money). I get great gas milage from the 125 2 cycle. (goes to 2 cylinders under 1800 rpm, great for trolling.) It's an great musky fgishing boat. Low enough to fish muskies easy yet high enough to handle 4-5 foot waves. The removeable front section is nice to have. I also would get the back casting deck extension (your fishing partner will thankyou).
I never owed 681vs sorry i can't compare the two. But you will not regret buying the 618vs.
