On my old Tuffy, I had a Merc Tiller that did the same thing. There was an adjustment on the side of the housing. Seems over time, the friction pads wore out, and would have been hundreds to replace, as the whole deal had to be taken apart. Merc had a kit for an external tension adjust that bolted on, and was about $40 dollars. I wonder if OMC had the same thing for yours?

If not, perhaps a bunzai cord on each side, with just the right tension to hold it centered, yet still allow you to turn it. hehehe

What happened to your old motor?
