Location: Twin Cities Metro | Fiberglass boats are typically heavier than aluminum boats of the same size. The extra weight provides stability, but also comes at a cost. Extra weight typically means you'll need a more powerful trolling motor to have the same level of boat control. That will cost you even more extra weight in the form of batteries to run a 36-Volt system rather than a 24-Volt system. It also means that you generally need a larger outboard to have the same performance. Extra weight also means you'll probably need a more robust towing vehicle.
In addition to extra weight, fiberglass is typically more expensive to repair than an aluminum boat should you have an unfortunate encounter with a rock or some other rigid object.
So it's not really about which is better. It's about what sort of trade-offs you make to get what you want or need. |
