Strange is the right word. Almost seems like there might be some form of chemical vapor involved. There is a member who posts as Chemi, chemical engineer, maybe he would have some insight.
I have fished a couple times when visiting my sister and brother in law in Alaska. They live right on the water and even in that salt water environment didn't see corrosion like that, in particular, that quickly.
