If you have an 80lb Terrova at max draw they pull 56 amps. MANY MANY connectors out there are not rated for that many amps therefore they get hot and the connection drops out or even can smoke the plug which sounds like you did? The reason you TM wires got hot was because of the resistance in the plug.

If you can check to see what your plug is rated for and if it is not more than 56 amps you probably need to change it out to one with a higher rating, even on a new boat. (Several of us have done this)

The battery tender plug is what I installed when I had the problem as well as several others on here and this fixed it. When I got mine it was rated for 100 amps but they may have changed that. I also believe Marinco has now come out with a higher rated plug too.
