There have been some instances of this in less than 20' of water and when you are over hard bottom. The unit is sensitive enough that it actually picks up the same echo twice because the return from a hard bottom is more direct and clear than one off mud or sand; thus resulting in it reading double the depth. Try adjusting the settings to those on the attached image.

These settings changes can be found in the SONAR menu tab on your HELIX unit.
