Location: Chippewa Falls, WI | I used to have a 21ft triton and now have a 21ft ranger reata. When I go to st Clair I fish out of a 21' tuffy. we watch bass boats get wet and pounded on 3-4' waves while we stand on the deck and cast. Can you fish out of an 18' or 21' bass boat on st Claire? Yes there are plenty out there... Are you going to have a rougher ride and get wet? Most likely...
every year they sink a few bass boats on st Claire and I was told by several guides that they sink a few during the bassmaster tourney, and those guys are all running 21' boats and have a lot more experience than most. The other thing to keep in mind on St. clair is things can and do change very fast. We got caught out in a pretty bad storm earlier this month fishing in a 12-15 sw wind with storms north of the lake. Another guide called us and said he had just hit the marina and the winds were 20+mph out of the north. We put the rods down and made a run for it along the south end (driving into 4'-5" waves) and then as we turned north to go along the western shore the north winds had hit. I was certainly happy to be riding in that tuffy and not a bass boat. We made it to the marina fine but I think a bass boat woulda had a hard time running at any kind of speed in those waves to get to the marina before the bad stuff hit! |
