Agree with the others, something was up with your battery. For reference, I run an old Lowrance 520C GPS (5 inch screen) off a Vexilar gel cell battery all day in sub freezing temps while ice fishing and it lasts just fine. That battery might weigh 3 pounds? In fairness I don't usually have the GPS on the whole time, but the point is, your cranking battery should have more than enough reserve to run all the electronics you need and start your boat just fine.

You can connect your electronics to the deep cell, but shouldn't need to. The alternator should pretty much keep your battery charged enough to run everything and keep the battery topped off if you are making any reasonable runs (15 minutes like you said). But, if the battery is toast, something was left on, or perhaps a short of something draining the battery, you could have problems.
