That sounds like bad seals. Those are very easy to replace yourself as long as you have a bit of patience. Resetting the brushes can get frustrating the first time you do it if they keep popping off of the spring. The other trick is that for the seal on the shaft you need to be careful not to damage it when putting it in. If you don't have a press find the right sized socked and lightly tap it into place. It's pretty clear when it's set in properly but you don't want to get it wedged in their on an angle.

I carry an extra set of seals in my boat because you never know when those things will crap out. From the time I start taking it apart until the time they are all set back in place it takes about 10 minutes.
