The larger lower unit gears will give the motor more UMPH on the low end which is good for getting boats out of the water. The loss of MPH is probably not much of an issue...especially if you decide to do a prop change. In most cases, going to a lower gear ratio will allow you to run a higher pitch prop since the gearing can turn it easier.... Much like how it is easier to peddle a bike in 1st gear as compared to 5th gear...the same idea applies..
