I have a 2008 E-TEC 250HO and I needed new thermostats installed so when I took to my local Ranger/ Evinrude dealer he said I could get the M-2 lower unit to replace my Lightning lower unit because its a stronger unit with bigger gears in it the M-2 has the 6 water intakes in the nose cone for better cooling and the normal side water intakes. The dealer said the Lightning lower unit had issues for over heating and now with the M-2 lower unit it runs cooler. For no charge because of my serial number on the outboard and a 26 pitch Raker II SS prop. I just had pay what I would have paid for the thermostat work. So I said OK great lets do it and he say I would lose some MPH but that's not a big concern to me its on my 620 Ranger. So you might want to check this out with a Evinrude dealer to see if your outboard serial number qualifies. Im pretty sure the M-2 lower unit is on the new G-2 Evinrude E-TECS.
