I always repacked very fall. Never had to replace a bearing doing this. Common mistake is to trust Bearing Buddies, and just pump grease in to them. The spring provides pressure supposed to prevent water from getting sucked in when submerged in colder water.

The newer(2000 Up?) Tuff Trails all have EZ Lube type axles. This is not a Bearing Buddy, and functions much differently. I periodically during the year give a a pump or two to see if any water comes out. If water does, I pump till it stops and just grease comes out. Wipe away the excess before replacing the rubber plug.
