BSG is spot on. try to get the biggest newest unit you can't quite afford. you'll be happier in the long run. the newer units are more compatible with new technology as it rolls out. with that said, If you plan on networking it at all or adding a minn kota with i link or something then go with the 900 units. the 1197 doesn't have a ethernet port. while the 900's do. the 1197 and the 998c have the same screen with no back lighting the HD unit is the backlit one. back lighting is what makes the unit HD. the resolution and pixels are the same. the screen is easier to see in direct sunlight. if 1299 is your top end get a 999 a quick google search will reveal several retailers selling the newest units at that price point. or you can patrol various classifieds and auction sites for deals on 1198's. have recently seen them going for anywhere between 1500 up to 1800. a little north of your price point but the big screens are absolutely worth it. after going to 1100's i can never go back.
