Hiya,

Definitely need the muffs. If you were to use the flush attachment on the motor, you would not be supplying water to the impeller located on the top portion of the lower unit. This would lead to a melt-down of the fins, leading to marbling (small chunks of rubber letting loose), then when you immerse the motor in water to run it, you shoot those little buggers up through your cooling system, potentially clogging it.

Muffs are inexpensive. Walmart, Fleet Farm, Gander Mountain, Cabela's, Bass Pro....all will carry them.
