Hiya,

Without seeing the rig it would be hard to tell, but I think it might be possible to get a hinge coupler on it, as anything you cut off in front of the winch, save a couple of inches, will then fold to the side.

Before doing so, I'd be curious to see how much more you gain by turning the engine full to one way or the other to see how much that gains you. Might be enough with that alone before pulling out the cutting tool and modifying the trailer.
