I have towed with a newer generation Nissan Xterra before and it did very well. You can get them really cheap used. Same motor, frame and transmission as the frontier. I believe they are tow rated for 5,000-5,500 lbs. A very capable off road vehicle as well if you can find one with the pro4x package.
