If you went from forward to neutral 3 or 4 times without the motor running you just reset the motor. It will again run the extra oil like it was new. I know kids like to play in the boat. Is there any chance this happened ?
I think you are thinking of Evinrude. You can not do that with a Merc. Your smoke is likely just water vapor from exhaust. If it shows up more on cooler morning then theres no doubt. Optis do not smoke and if they do you best take it to a dealer pronto.
